Olaf Mengeringhausen
"It's the special moments in life that burn themselves into the memory, and the desire to transform them artistically only disappears once you've tried - no mission is impossible"
From abstract and kinetic sculptures to light objects and paintings, German / NZ artist Olaf Mengeringhausen shows his creative approach to materials.
Mengeringhausen feels at home in various subject areas that he explores, such as people, technology and nature.
Born in Duisburg, Mengeringhausen was strongly influenced by the steel city, industrial culture and industrial design in his creative process.
It was only when he moved to New Zealand, where he now lives, that nature began to play an increasingly important role in his artistic work.
Some of Mengeringhausen's works, which were created in New Zealand, only evolved because they were modelled on unique landscapes.
Like his ‘FIRE & ICE’ series and the ‘ERUPTION’ edition, a juxtaposition of elemental forces, from the breathtaking glaciers of the South Island to the volcanic activity of the North Island, the contrasting yet complementary energies.
Impressions from some of his earlier experiences were only realised artistically years later, such as the ‘Legs’ series, which was triggered by an IGEDO fashion show in Düsseldorf and completed in New Zealand.
Mengeringhausen's technical expertise (master's degree), creativity and the high quality of his work reflect more than 20 years of practice.
During this period, he has created an extremely diverse body of work that includes paintings, drawings, figurative and abstract works.
