Sophie Gill
In 2018 Sophie graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Auckland University of Technology.
Inspired by music and the people and places of her past, Sophie makes art that sings: bright
confident, energetic pieces, most often in acrylic and chalk pastel. Her influences are strongly
musical, including jazz, rhythm and blues, as well as disco. These musical genres meld
and fuse into a spontaneous outpouring of shapes and motifs that explode on the canvas.
“The music and its mood inspire and guide me – it’s like choreographing a dance on canvas.
In fact, much of the time I am dancing as I am making.”
Sophie’s strong background in jazz, ballet and hip hop dance disciplines informs her work
and she brings this absolute joy in movement to the canvas.
“I often name my art after the song that held the most influence during its creation.”
A childhood in the country, coupled with a deep love for all animals flows through her artistic practise,
with home as a recurring motif and references to much loved pets often present.
